This article was presented as the 1986 Dean Weir Memorial Lecture at the University of Alberta and briefly discusses some of the philosophies of criminal sentencing including changes in the United States penal philosophy and practice. The application and effect of these new systems of sentencing in Canada is also considered.Downloads
